Shoji

Shoji are best described as light-weight translucent panels, usually covering windows but also as closet doors, room partitions, and hinged standing screens. They are constructed with narrow stiles, somewhat larger rails, and either single or double sided grillwork with Japanese shoji paper attached.

In soft woods we offer clear vertical grain redwood, fir, and hemlock all finished with clear oil and wax. Hardwoods include red and white oak, mahogany, cherry, and maple finished in a clear flat lacquer.

We work with the client to determine the grill design. Harmonious balance inspires us, but we also respect our client's desires.

Shoji insert material is a broad topic. Traditionally Japanese washi (hand made paper) was used in shoji, although today more durable machine made papers and synthetics have replaced washi. Most of our panels come with machine made paper, although other possibilities include glass, fiberglass, acrylics, plastics and laminates.

Unless otherwise specified, all our panels include flush mortised ebony finger pulls from Japan.

For larger door size panels, a koshi-ita, or kickboard of solid wood, usually 13" to 16" high from the bottom of the panel, is a practical and aesthetic option.

For those building tea rooms or tatami rooms, we offer a yuki-mi-shoji (snow viewing shoji) with a vertical moving panel within the shoji which provides an outside view while one is seated on the tatami floor.

Our shoji screens can also be made in the traditional Japanese manner with mortise and tenon joinery; woven grill mortised into the frame; and a finish with a razor sharp knife. These panels are available only in single side lattice (grill), and only with our shoji gami Japanese paper. Since no metal hardware is used in their assembly or installation, our traditional made shoji screens are offered as wood sliders only -- no metal tracking. Ebony or cherry flush mortised finger pulls are offered as an option. These panels are made only from old growth Port Orford Cedar, a clear light colored Oregon softwood. Beautiful, practical, traditional, and long lasting.

We are justifiably proud of our shoji screens. Meticulous attention to detail and precise craftmanship go into each panel, and we feel they compare favorably to the best shoji made in America.
